Breakthrough advanced materials enabling high-performance, durable and cost-competitive alkaline and AEM electrolysis
Next-Generation PGM-Free Cathodes for Scalable Green Hydrogen
Reinventing Cathodes for the Hydrogen Economy
MATCATH develops an entirely new generation of metal-free catalyst and electrode systems for alkaline and anion-exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis. Combining advanced materials engineering, electrochemical innovation and industrial scalability, MATCATH aims to achieve step-change gains in efficiency, durability and cost, eliminating the need for platinum-group metals (PGMs) and critical raw materials (CRMs).

Cost and Durability Barriers in Hydrogen Electrolysis
To scale green hydrogen, next-generation electrolyzers require breakthrough cathode technologies.
Current cathodes rely on PGMs and CRMs, increasing costs and limiting scalability.
Industrial electrolyzers need higher current density and lower overpotential at reduced operational cost.
AEM and alkaline systems lack high-efficiency, long-lifetime, metal-free electrodes.
Europe must reduce supply-chain risks and secure strategic autonomy in hydrogen technologies.
